چکیده

-In this paper a three-phase model (liquid, solid and gas) of the mushy zone for investigation of porosity formation in solidifying castings is developed. This model takes into account the release of the dissolved gas from the alloy as well as heat transfer and interdendritic fluid flow in the mushy zone. An important aspect of this work is related to accounting for the term describing porosity formation in the continuity equation. The magnitude and influence of this term is estimated. Distributions of residual porosity in castings are calculated based on a uniform solidification assumption for the particular case of aluminum-rich A1-Cu castings. An analytical criterion, identifying conditions under which there will be no porosity formation, is established.

A simple Analytical model for solidification cooling rate based on the local heat flux density

A new simple analytical model for prediction of cooling rate in the solidification process based on the local heat flux density extracted during solidification is introduced. In the modeling procedure, a solidifying control volume is considered in the mushy zone in which a heat balance equation is used to derive the present model. As the local heat flux density is a measurable parameter, the pr...

Development of a Hot Tear Indicator for Steel Castings

A hot tear indicator based on the physics of solidification and deformation is presented. This indicator is derived using available data from computer simulation of solidification and solid deformation. Hot tears form when the mushy zone is starved of liquid feeding and deformed in tension. The unfed tensile deformation causes a small additional porosity. A physical model based on a mass balanc...

Importance of Melt Flow in Solidifying Mushy Zone

A mixture solidification model is employed to study the interaction between the melt flow and the growing mushy zone. The goal is to address the importance of considering the melt flow and flow pattern (laminar or turbulent) in the growing mushy zone. A simple 2D benchmark with parallel flow passing by/through a vertically growing mushy zone is considered. Parameter studies with different veloc...

Investigation of Ca in the Microstructural Evolution and Porosity Analysis of ZK60 Alloy in As-Cast and Extruded Conditions

This research work has been carried out to study the effect of different Ca contents (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0) on the microstructure and porosity content of ZK60 alloys. The samples were examined by using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the modification efficiency of the alloy with different Ca concentrations. The cast specimens were modified, homogenized and extru...

Solidification and thermal performance analysis of the low carbon steel during the continuous casting process

The present paper evaluates the effect of the nozzle characteristics on the heat transfer and phase change of the low carbon steel during the continuous casting process. A three-dimensional energy equation and a solidification model are used to drive the governing equation of the phase change and temperature distribution. A linear relation is obtained to predict the temperature-dependent of the...
